AVS codes

The Address Verification Service (AVS) is a fraud prevention tool that issuers automatically apply to payments to verify that the customer is genuine.

It performs an AVS check, which compares the billing address provided by the customer with the address on the payment card.

You receive the result of AVS checks as AVS codes. AVS codes describe whether there was a full or partial address match, or a mismatch.

You can receive the following AVS codes:

AVS code	Scheme(s)	Description
`A`	American Express, Mastercard, Visa	Partial match. The street address matches, but the ZIP code or post code does not.
`B`	Visa	Partial match. The street address matches, but the ZIP code or post code could not verified, likely due to incorrect formatting.
`D`	Visa	Full match. The street address and the ZIP code or postal code match.
`G`	Visa	The issuing bank is international so the address and the ZIP code or post code could not be verified.
`I`	Visa	The address could not be verified.
`M`	Visa	Full match. The street address and the ZIP code or postal code match (international only).
`N`	American Express, Mastercard, Visa	No match. The street address and the ZIP code or post code do not match.
`O`	American Express	The address could not be verified.
`P`	Visa	Partial match. The ZIP code or post code matches, but the street address could not be verified, likely due to incorrect formatting.
`R`	American Express, Mastercard, Visa	The service is unavailable. Retry the AVS check.
`S`	American Express, Mastercard	Not supported.
`U`	American Express, Mastercard, Visa	The address was not verified due to lack of issuer support or system malfunction.
`W`	Mastercard	Partial match. The ZIP code or post code matches, but the address does not.
`X`	Mastercard	Full match. The nine-digit post code and corresponding address match.
`Y`	American Express, Mastercard, Visa	Full match. The five-digit post code and corresponding address match.
`Z`	American Express, Mastercard, Visa	Partial match. The five-digit ZIP code or post code matches, but the street does not.
`AE1`	American Express	The cardholder's name is incorrect, but the ZIP code or post code matches.
`AE2`	American Express	The cardholder's name is incorrect, but the street and ZIP code or post code match.
`AE3`	American Express	The cardholder's name is incorrect, but the street matches.
`AE4`	American Express	The cardholder's name matches.
`AE5`	American Express	The cardholder's name and the ZIP code or post code match.
`AE6`	American Express	The cardholder's name, street, and ZIP code or post code match.
`AE7`	American Express	The cardholder's name and the street match.
