From time to time, Visa reviews its response code usage to ensure they reflect the cardholder experience.
In a circular last year, Visa advised some issuers were using response codes intended for internal Visa use incorrectly. They will start reclassifying these as generic 20005 (Declined – Do not honor) response codes when received by an issuer.
What is Visa changing?
Effective April 12, 2025, Visa will begin reclassifying response code 20012 (Invalid transaction), and 30015 (No such issuer) when they identify that the issuer has used these response codes incorrectly
Effective October 18, 2025, Visa will begin reclassifying response code 20057 (Transaction not permitted to cardholder) when they identify that the issuer has used this response code incorrectly
What this means for you
After these dates, you could see an increase in 20005 response codes from certain issuers. To prepare for this change, you may wish to analyze the response codes you’re receiving to see if certain issuers are sending larger volumes of 20013, 30015, or 20057 declines.
After the above dates, we expect you’ll see most of these declines returned as 20005 instead.
