Croatia to adopt the euro in 2023

Oct 31, 2022
Stacey Ruggles

The republic of Croatia will adopt the euro as their official currency from 00:00 CET on January 1, 2023, at a fixed rate of 7.53450 Croatian kuna (HRK) to 1 euro (EUR).

This means that all financial institutions in Croatia must conduct all payments and transactions in euro from this date. All card schemes have confirmed they will no longer settle transactions in HRK and will begin settling these transactions in EUR*.

What do you need to do?

All authorization requests will need to be submitted in euro using the currency code EUR/978 for any transactions completed in Croatia. Any transactions submitted in HRK will be rejected by the card schemes.

If you are not currently set up to transact in euros, Checkout.com will enable this currency for you. Your Customer Success Manager will be in contact to confirm the bank account that you would like funds routed to.

*HRK transactions that settled prior to January 1, 2023 will still be supported for refunds until February 28, 2023. After 28 February 2023, if you refund a transaction that was authorized before January 1, 2023, Checkout.com will convert it to euros.
