LONDON, UK — 29 October 2026 — Checkout.com, a leading global digital payments company, today announced that it is live with Visa Payment Passkey (VPP), enabling merchants to offer a simpler and more secure way to authenticate online payments.
Authentication is essential to secure online payments, but additional verification steps can cost merchants sales. Visa Payment Passkey replaces one-time passcodes (OTP) and other verification methods with the cardholder’s device unlock method such as a fingerprint or face scan. This helps reduce friction at checkout while maintaining strong security. Reducing this friction can have a significant positive impact for merchants.
Visa Payment Passkey is available through the secure infrastructure that Checkout.com merchants already use. This means eligible merchants can offer it, without building a new checkout flow. If passkey authentication is unavailable, the transaction continues using existing verification methods.
The solution is being rolled out in phases, starting with selected merchants across the UK and Europe. It can support both first-time and returning customers and is particularly relevant for businesses with frequent, repeat purchases, including retailers, marketplaces, food delivery platforms and digital services.
Strong, user-friendly authentication is also a foundation for the next phase of digital commerce. As more purchases are initiated with the help of AI agents, trusted ways to verify both the person behind a payment and their purchase intent become more important. Checkout.com is also supporting Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, helping merchants distinguish trusted AI shopping agents from bots and malicious traffic.
Rami Josef, Senior Product Director at Checkout.com said: "Every one-time passcode is a point where a customer can walk away. Visa Payment Passkey lets returning shoppers authenticate the way they already unlock their phone, making checkout both safer and simpler. Because it runs on the authentication infrastructure our merchants already use, they can offer it without rebuilding their checkout."
Mathieu Altwegg, Head of Product & Solutions at Visa, said: “Consumers increasingly expect digital experiences that are both seamless and secure. By bringing Visa Payment Passkey to Checkout.com’s merchants, we’re making it easier for businesses to reduce friction at checkout and for consumers to authenticate securely. That will become even more important as AI agents play a greater role in how people shop and pay.”
