# Refund a payment

Issue a refund to return a payment to a customer.

You can issue a refund where you reference an existing payment ID authorized by Checkout.com, or an unreferenced refund, where you do not need to reference a payment ID.

> Unreferenced refunds are only supported for card payments in the United States (US).
