# Add funds
You can add funds to your Checkout Business Account by bank transfer, and use them for [Refunds](https://www.checkout.com/docs/payments/manage-payments/refund-a-payment.md), [Issuing payments](https://www.checkout.com/docs/card-issuing.md), or [Bank or Card Payouts](https://www.checkout.com/docs/payments/request-payouts.md).
You can generate the bank details and payment reference you need in the Dashboard, or retrieve them using the API.
---
## Before you start
To generate bank details in the Dashboard, ensure that you have one of the following [user roles](https://www.checkout.com/docs/business-operations/use-the-dashboard/manage-users/user-permissions.md#Pre-defined_roles):
- Admin
- A custom role with the `View balances` permission
To retrieve bank details using the API, you need:
- Top-ups enabled for the sub-account – The API refers to adding funds to a sub-account as a top-up. To enable top-ups, contact your account manager or [request support](https://dashboard.checkout.com/support/new?topic=case_account_management_and_access&issue=issue_account_changes).
- An [access token](https://www.checkout.com/docs/developer-resources/api/manage-api-keys/oauth-2-0-client-credentials.md) with the `balances` or `balances:top-up-instructions` scope, or your [secret key](https://www.checkout.com/docs/developer-resources/api/manage-api-keys/api-keys.md).

## Generate bank details in the Dashboard
To generate the bank details and payment reference for your transfer:
1. Sign in to the [Dashboard](https://dashboard.checkout.com).
2. Go to _Business account_ > _Balances_.
3. Select _Add funds_.
4. From the dropdown menu, select the sub-account you want to add funds to.
5. Select the balance type: _Available balance_ or _Operational balance_.

## Retrieve top-up instructions using the API
Top-up instructions are the bank details and payment reference for a specific sub-account.
Call the [Retrieve top-up instructions](https://api-reference.checkout.com/tag/Balances/#operation/getTopUpInstructions) endpoint, and provide the:
- Entity ID that owns the sub-account as the `{entityId}` path parameter
- Sub-account ID as the `{currencyAccountId}` path parameter – This is the sub-account's `currency_account_id`, prefixed by `ca_`.
**Production**
`GET` `https://balances.checkout.com/entities/{entityId}/currency-accounts/{currencyAccountId}/top-up-instructions`
**Sandbox**
`GET` `https://balances.sandbox.checkout.com/entities/{entityId}/currency-accounts/{currencyAccountId}/top-up-instructions`
> **Information**
>
> If you're a platform, you can provide your own entity ID to retrieve the top-up instructions for any sub-account beneath you in your hierarchy.
The response returns the sub-account's payment reference and its bank details, grouped by transfer type: `domestic` or `international`. A domestic transfer is equivalent to a _Local_ transfer in the Dashboard.
The transfer types available, and the bank details you receive for each one, depend on the country the sub-account is held in. Only `beneficiary_account_name` and `bank_name` are returned for every transfer type.

## Make the transfer
Use the bank details to make the transfer from your bank account. Always provide the payment reference in the _Reference_ or _Payment description_ field of the transfer. This ensures the funds are allocated to the correct sub-account and balance.
If you generated the bank details in the Dashboard, the reference prefix indicates the balance the funds are added to:
- `RF` prefix – Your _Operational_ balance
- `TP` prefix – Your _Available_ balance
> **Note**
>
> - Do not use any special characters in the bank details. This can delay the funds arriving in your balance.
> - International transfers may take longer than 24 hours for Checkout.com to receive.
Funds you add appear in your balance activity chart in the Dashboard and in your [financial reports](https://www.checkout.com/docs/funds-management/retrieve-financial-reports.md).
