# Simulate card verification outcomes

When you carry out a card verification value (CVV) check, or perform a [card verification](https://www.checkout.com/docs/payments/authenticate-payments/card-verification.md), you'll be notified of the outcome through a [CVV code](https://www.checkout.com/docs/developer-resources/testing/codes/cvv-response-codes.md).

You can simulate the various possible outcomes of a CVV check to test your integration is working as expected.

To test the various outcomes, set up a new payment request and:

1. Set the `source.number` field to `4659105569051157` to test a Visa CVV check, or `5305484748800098` to test a Mastercard CVV check.
2. Set the `source.cvv` field to one of the values from the following table, depending on the outcome you want to test for:

| CVV check outcome | Description | source.cvv value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `D` | CVV did not match | `204` |
| `N` | CVV should be on the card, but the merchant indicated that it is not present | Leave field empty |
| `P` | CVV check was not performed | `205` |
| `U` | The issuer does not support CVV | `202` |
| `Y` | CVV matched | Any three-digit number not listed in the table |

### Response example

Regardless of the CVV used, the response will contain a `response_code` field with the value `10000`.
